Fabrics & Materials

We work primarily with natural fibers, appreciating their unique qualities and character. Each fabric has its own drape, texture, and care requirements.

Natural fabric textures

Cotton

Versatile and breathable, cotton is suitable for a wide range of garments. It can be woven into various weights and textures, from lightweight voile to sturdy denim. Cotton responds well to washing and can be pressed easily, making it practical for everyday clothing.

We work with cotton in various forms: plain weaves, twills, knits, and more. Each type has its own characteristics and requires appropriate handling during sewing and alterations.

Linen

Cool and durable, linen has a natural texture that softens with wear and washing. It wrinkles easily, which is part of its character. Linen is excellent for warm-weather garments and becomes more comfortable over time.

When working with linen, we consider its tendency to shrink and its natural texture. Seams and hems are finished appropriately to prevent fraying and maintain the garment's appearance.

Wool

Warm and resilient, wool is excellent for outerwear, suits, and tailored garments. It has natural elasticity and can be shaped through pressing and steaming. Different types of wool—from fine merino to sturdy tweed—have distinct characteristics.

We handle wool with care, using appropriate pressing techniques and considering its natural properties. Wool garments often benefit from professional pressing to maintain their shape and appearance.

Silk

Delicate and smooth, silk requires careful handling and precise techniques. It drapes beautifully and has a natural luster. Silk can be lightweight and flowing or heavier and more structured, depending on the weave.

When working with silk, we use fine needles and appropriate thread. Seams are finished carefully to prevent fraying, and pressing is done with care to avoid damage to the delicate fibers.

Blends & Other Natural Fibers

We also work with natural fiber blends and other materials such as hemp, bamboo, and cashmere. Each material has its own properties and requires appropriate techniques.

When working with blends, we consider the characteristics of each fiber component and adapt our approach accordingly. The care requirements and handling methods depend on the specific blend composition.

Fabric Selection

When creating custom garments, we discuss fabric choices with you. Factors to consider include the garment's intended use, care requirements, drape, and texture preferences.

We can work with fabrics you provide or help you source appropriate materials. The selection process involves understanding how the fabric will behave in the finished garment and ensuring it aligns with your needs.

Understanding Fabric Properties

Each fabric has properties that influence how it should be handled during sewing, alterations, and repairs:

Understanding these properties helps us choose appropriate techniques, threads, and finishing methods for each project.

Thread & Notions

We use threads and notions that are appropriate for each fabric type. Thread selection considers fiber content, color matching, and strength requirements. Buttons, zippers, and other fasteners are chosen to complement the fabric and garment style.

When making repairs or alterations, we match existing threads and notions when possible, or select new ones that blend well with the original materials.

Fabric Selection Guidance

Choosing the right fabric is essential for both custom garments and repairs. We consider factors such as the garment's intended use, care requirements, drape, and texture preferences.

We can help you understand how different fabrics behave and which ones are best suited for your needs. Whether you're creating a new piece or matching fabric for a repair, we're here to guide you.

Natural Fiber Benefits

Natural fiber garments

Natural fibers offer unique qualities that synthetic materials cannot replicate. They breathe, age gracefully, and can be repaired and maintained more easily than many synthetic alternatives.

Working with natural fibers requires understanding their characteristics, but the results are garments that feel comfortable, look beautiful, and can be cared for and repaired over many years.
